The whole popunder phenomenon began in the 90s, and grew to have pretty bad connotations after sites of yesterday abused these one-time effective methods of promotion.

We remember these days well, and we're sure you remember them too.

Clicking the x to close one of these windows would make 5 new ones appear, a little like this.

It seemed like a pretty good way to catch the user's attention at the time—so some people thought.  But really, this poor practice ended up tainting the effective popunder forever.

However, today, we know better.

While the use of pops have decreased dramatically over the past decade for the aforementioned reasons, it’s important to note that they’re not dead. We believe pops just need to be put to better use.

Here’s how to get the most out of your popunders… 2015-style.

Make ‘em Smart

Looking for new ways to monetize your site's traffic, but running out of ad spots?  No worries, that's where the popunder comes in handy.

Now, this doesn't mean you have to max out on available ad space before you should consider turning to pops... not at all!

Sometimes it's wise to evaluate your total number of banner ads, and if the number seems high, the popunder route might be that extra magical touch that can do just as well, if not better, than your average typical display ad.

Popunders are an excellent choice because they can be subtle and discreet (especially if they don’t contain audio).

Although, the smartest and most efficient way of incorporating a popunder is by making it look like it’s part of your website. You see, once a visitor is convinced that whatever they’re seeing is more an extension of your website and less like an ad, they’ll be more likely to click on its content.

Make ‘em Legit

Sure, popunders can be great money-makers, but it’s important to exercise good judgment and not go overboard.

No one wants to return to the days of websites like these— when you can’t even navigate a site without being bombarded with new window after new window.

Keep it simple.

Remember, we’re doing pops 2015-style.

And to this point… the use of popunders in advertising has actually been studied and there are a bunch of standards & conventions that one can follow to ensure popunder legitimacy.

Here is a set of industry guidelines, as far as pop-ups and popunders go, set in place by The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB):

Make ‘em Fun & Interactive

Now, no matter what you do or how well you do it, there will always be people out there who find popunders of any kind annoying. There’s no changing this. You won’t change these people’s minds.

An IAB study seems to support this consensus, showing that more than 90% of consumers find popunders annoying or objectionable.  That’s a shame!

That’s why it’s more important than ever to exercise good judgment when incorporating popunders into your marketing strategy. People are already on edge.

What we’re saying here is, try to avoid featuring something in pop-form that's already advertised on your site.

If you’re already promoting X in a banner ad, it makes sense not to promote X in a pop.

Use popunders as an opportunity to introduce something fun and interactive to your audience.

That’s why games, surveys, and instant messenger chat pops typically do the best at generating leads from your visitors: all of the above engage the visitor.

You’re not just seeking a click.

Choose the Right Offer

So, if you heed all our advice, you should have no problem getting the most out of your pops.

One final thing you should be asking yourself is:  what offer am I going to promote?

A few days ago, we announced a major product launch. We announced some new additions to our lineup of “Survey” offers at CrakRevenue — The Dating Survey — and a whole bunch of new tours and banners for The Porn Survey.

We’re going to let you in on a little secret:  these Survey offers were designed with popunder promotion in mind. They actually perform the best when promoted via popunder.

With our Survey offers, your users are prompted to take part in a brief 4-question Survey.  Upon completion of this short Survey, your visitor is offered a prize which consists of a free trial membership or a discount on various CrakRevenue top-converting offers in numerous verticals.

We’ve found these Survey offers to be a tremendous success because let’s face it… people love to be engaged, people love to be rewarded with prizes, and people love to feel like they’re getting a deal.

In fact, these offers have been so lucrative thus far, we’re even working on some future additions to our Survey family: be on the lookout for The Cam Survey and The Torrent Survey in the coming months!

Get Ready to Make Some Cash

With our tips and tailor-made Survey offers, you can finally rejoice. Money will be lining those pockets in no time.

Be smart, join the popunder club

Remember, these pops don’t have to be (and aren’t meant to be) annoying.

Popunders are just another medium to get some interactive content out there that you can profit from.

Promoting them right and without excess will yield the best results long term… without affecting your other ad spots.

So, go on, be daring: Try one of our Survey offers on your site now!

You have everything to gain and nothing to lose!
